Sarah’s Guide To Buying Wood Furniture… With a Hint of Ethical Consumerism

Published by:

So this week I have been putting my little brainy cap on and been getting down with some hardcore internet research on buying wood furniture. I absolutely love wood furniture. It is without a doubt my favourite style but I was never really sure on the ethical sides of things and other important factors that buyers should really be considering when thinking about buying wood furniture.

Ethical consumerism is something everyone should be aware of and unfortunately they aren’t, slightly off topic but I also found this amazing video that just sums up Ethical Consumerism.

So back to the Wood…..Wood is perhaps the most common material used for furniture making and historically woods like rosewood and fruitwoods were very popular and are now highly sought after and collectable.

After a bit of research across the net I decided to create this little report to explain the popularity of vintage furniture in the current consumer marketplace!

Today the most common types of wood used in furniture are the less expensive ones such as Pine and Ash but the more expensive variations such as Mahogany, Oak and Walnut are as ever popular and a sign of good quality. These types of wood can either be found on their own or combined with cheaper woods in some furniture ranges.

As consumers become more ethically aware in the home this has also increased interest in how products are sourced, furniture is no different and it’s now possible to buy furniture, especially wood pieces, that are ethically sourced.reclaimedwoodd

Many companies have tapped into this desire for furniture which is respectful of the environment and embraces all things ethical. Their furniture is sourced in Indonesia and India and the company concentrates on supporting local furniture making businesses and therefore continuing the country’s tradition.

It is important to recognise the characteristics of wood furniture so you are aware of its value and also re-sale value. Simple things such as being able to identify types of grain and colour are useful.

Wood is more often than not treated as bare wood can be susceptible to contractions and changes.

There are several ways that wood can be treated but for use in furniture it’s likely to be either varnished lacquered or oil coated all which protect the wood from wear and tear and give it a unique appearance and texture.

It’s imperative that wood is cared for effectively and there are various products which can be used for this purpose. Waxes are the traditional treatment used for woods and are particularly useful when used on Mahogany. Before treating your furniture you should test its compatibility with the product and this can be done by trying it out on a hidden part of the furniture where it can’t be seen.
A wax product should only be used on furniture once a month to “feed it” and sustain its shine, more frequent usage will lead to build up and the furniture will take on a dull appearance.

Thats it guys! I hope this little report will help you guys when you are heading to the shops to grab yourself some new wood furniture!

Going Crazy For My Brand New Roller Garage Doors

Published by:

Hi guys, just a quick post I wanted to share with you the latest addition to the house….  I’ve just got myself a swanky new garage door 🙂

So the next time your passing by my house I’m hoping our latest home improvement will grab your attention , it was installed just yesterday.  Have you guessed what my new pride and joy is? Yes, it is the new electric roller garage doors that look amazing and makes my home much more appealing!

New Hormann Roller Garage DoorsIt was not entirely my decision, as my husband and I talked and discussed about getting new garage doors. This happened when the old roller garage door completely fell off its tracks. We came to the same conclusion that the garage door was old anyway, and maybe the ball bearings, the moving parts, or the rust finally had its way and put the metal door out of alignment. It was our very first garage door and have been faithfully serving us until then. We called a local company www.doormaticgaragedoors.co.uk for an estimate, and when they came up with the cost, it seemed that it would be better to just install a new one. And we couldn’t be happier with this decision.

Not just the garage doors, but the whole house was in need of a facelift. Me and my husband also discussed our home’s future, and thought it was a good idea to start renovations here and there, when we could. We thought that when the time comes that we need to sell our home, it would be appealing right off the bat by enhancing the curb appeal. You know, maintaining an excellent outdoor landscape, keeping the house looking presentable with a fresh coat of paint, and don’t forget- the garage door is an important facet and facade of the house, so it has to be upgraded as well. The timing was right on target; the old roller garage doors fell and it was high time for a new one.

We tried shopping around for new garage doors, and came up with two types- sectional garage doors, and the newer roller garage door. I remember how during that time, my husband and I came into opposition, as he presented his side and said that sectional garage doors was definitely the way forward. I checked out the various features and benefits of the sectional garage doors versus the electric roller garage doors, and my own garage for coming up with the decision. We had a car that would fit, yes, but what if we chose to upgrade our car’s size as well? I included it in the discussion, and finally he agreed with me that roller garage doors are the best option to allow a little more head room should we fancy a bigger car.New Hormann Roller Garage Doors inside

So when that was all settled and the go signal was given, we took a look around town and shopped and browsed around for a good company that could install us a roller garage doors UK area. In the end we used Doormatic the same company we called to help repair the original. We called them for a chat and a quote on installing a new door, and they agreed quickly and went on to provide a very competitive estimate. I was also very impressed at their range of roller garage doors and they even provided some benefits that we have not thought about. They even gave me a list about it, which I will share some here:

Benefits of a Roller Garage Door

-A rubber seal on the bottom will keep out nature’s elements, dust, stray leaves, mice and other rodents from entering your house through the garage.

-Great for driveways with limited space due to its vertical operation.

-No outward swing, and when installed correctly, provides an excellent security.

In the end we went with a Rollmatic from a brand called Hornman, check out the video below

We were impressed by Doormatic’s level of industry knowledge about roller garage doors right at the start. When they showed us their fantastic range of electric roller garage doors, we were blown out of the water. There were so many choices and different variations that it can look customized and will provide a premium look for our home. We were not disappointed- they provided a top-notch bespoke service from start to finish, were very professional and friendly, and needed little to no supervision during the installation. We gazed in awe for about 15 minutes at the new roller garage door when it was finished. I certainly could not be any happier with Doormatic for making our simple garage door dream come true!

Obsessed with paved walkways!

Published by:

pavingThis week I have been getting myself a little over excited with paved walkways, especially with the ones on driveways and patios! I feel that paved walkways really enhance your lifestyle and add distinction to your outdoor environment.
They are pretty much guaranteed for life and are a fantastic solution for lasting beauty! I just love how paved walkways have a huge selection of colours, styles and textures – the possibilities are endless!
Take a look at these stunning designs that really caught my eye this week.
paved walkways1This one in particular really stood out to me because of the adding seating wall and outdoor grill enclosure. It really makes the outdoor living space a gem for relaxing with your family and friends.
The Social Butterfly Layout

Im in LOVE with this! Look how beautifully the paved driveway compliments the brick work and colour scheme
Take a lot at these stunning paved driveways:

paved walkwaysI personally think your buildings brickwork and your paved walkway should compliment each other. As you can see from the three images above, they all commit to a colour scheme. The first one is mixture of pinks beiges browns and whites, the second one adopts a modern and monochrome feel with its simplistic colour scheme and the third one has a real cosy and traditional look.
Which style do you prefer?

The Beginning To A Healthier Lifestyle

Published by:

So last week, I woke up one morning thinking about how I can improve my eating habits into something a little more healthy and sustainable so I can lead a more healthier lifestyle.

lemonsNow, i have to first rant a little about faddy quick fix diets that quite often involve living off shakes and “meal replacement products/bars”. Lets be honest, nobody on this earth is going to want to sustain a lifestyle of eating bars and drinking shakes as their everyday meal, especially when you’re attending social events or meeting up with friends for food etc… 9/10 You are going to fail and you are going to binge eat and end up gaining back twice as much weight as you did before! Trust me, I’ve tried them all and been there done that so to speak…

To me, healthy eating is all about eating less of the bad stuff and replacing and tweaking your overall diet plan by adding in some healthy bits. A healthy lifestyle does not need to be overwhelming of any sort, in fact, the most sustainable way to do it is to make small, gradual changes. Im not going to expect too much of myself too soon as I know this is a marathon – a lifetime one, not a sprint!

Here are the simple changes I am going to adopt this week:

*Select brown bread instead of white bread – this is easy for me as I LOVE brown bread*

*Use mustard instead of mayo on my sandwiches*streberries

*Eat the white meat of cooked chicken instead of dark meat*

*Bake, grill or boil my food instead of frying*

*Switch from full-fat cheese to reduced fat cheese*

*Reduce portion size*

*Replace fries with a garnished side salad*

*Snack on fruit and veg instead of chocolate and crisps*

*Drink plenty of water*

As you can see, I’m not completely cutting food out. I am replacing them with healthier alternatives that will be better for my general health.

So, here goes! I will let you know next week if I’ve completely ate my words and buried my head in the sand at the nearest McDonalds…

Royal Pink Design Fit For a Princess

Video Published by:

With the Queen grinning like a cheshire cat and fans of the royals getting all excited over the birth of the new Royal baby, I thought it would be a fitting post to have a look at some Royal interior themes this week.

I first want to start with a very big congratulations to William and Kate,  according to BBC news “The Duke of Cambridge weighed 8lbs 3oz (3.7kg)” here is the magical moment they left the hospital.

It got me wondering what type of princess bedroom would the The Duke of Cambridge be going home to?

Would it be the traditional royal treatment with a canopied four poster perhaps?

Kids’ bedroom ideas: go BIG, or go home I say. Decorating a kids’ room doesn’t mean you have to scrimp on style and design. In fact, it opens up a whole new world of exciting design possibilities, without limitations. It’s the perfect excuse to be as over the top, brave or magical as you want. Take a look at these fantastic and royally over the top princess rooms….

My Daughter Polly is a princess lover and I have always found some fantastic princess styled furniture from a bunch of online stores that sell Disney Princess products.

For those of you looking for a more grand and royal approached theme, you can find some fantastic royal-styled furniture from some interesting Vintage stores and old antique places on the high-street. You may even be surprised by what you will find from second-hand/charity stores!

Thats all folks! If you have any queries or would like to share your thoughts on royal themed interior and express your excitement about the arrival of the Royal Baby then get in touch.
